Americano vs Mexicano: which padel format to run

Both formats rotate partners so everyone plays with and against everyone. The difference is how they pair you each round.

Americano

Pairings are fixed by a schedule, regardless of score. Every player partners every other player once. Points carry across rounds, and the highest total wins.

Best for: mixed-level social sessions where the goal is to play with everyone.

Mexicano

Pairings are decided by the standings — after each round, players are re-sorted by points and paired so the leaders face the leaders. It self-balances as it goes.

Best for: competitive groups who want closer, more meaningful matches by the end.

Quick rule

  • New group, wide range of levels → Americano.
  • Tight group that wants a real winner → Mexicano.

Either way, the session is better when the starting four are evenly matched — which is exactly what your PadiQ level is for.

Frequently asked

What is the difference between Americano and Mexicano padel?
In Americano, partner pairings follow a fixed schedule so everyone plays with everyone, regardless of score. In Mexicano, pairings are re-sorted by points after each round, so leaders face leaders. Americano is more social; Mexicano self-balances toward a clear winner.
Which format is better for mixed levels?
Americano suits mixed levels best. Its fixed rotation guarantees everyone partners everyone once, spreading stronger and weaker players evenly across rounds. Mexicano clusters similar-scoring players together, which can leave the weakest players stuck in lopsided matches as the session progresses.
